News post

Two quick updates that you probably already knew about:

First, the New England Webcomics Weekend was a great success. The turnout by both creators and supporters was fantastic; in attendance were dozens of artists whom I respect a great deal… and then there was Least I Could Do’s Ryan Sohmer. Sohmer’s utter contempt for other cartoonists is very well documented; what his behavior at Webcomics Weekend confirmed was his contempt for his fans. Sohmer was as self-important in panel discussions as he was evasive on the convention floor; he spent all of Sunday morning nipping at a Red Bull and leaving his artist and a couple hangers-on to man the table–which I suppose he considers better than trying to engage potential readers.

I will never for the life of me understand how Ryan Sohmer got a single sale out of Webcomics Weekend. His comic–minus the sex, the Batman and Star Wars, the ugly egomaniac wish-fulfillment fantasy–is mediocre through and through, the kind of strip you’d see in a particularly misogynistic daily newspaper. Sohmer’s work reflects his disdain for comics and his attitude his disdain for people who read them; why not respond in kind? He is a charlatan who, in a just world, would be selling unsuccessful pickup-artist programs on 3 a.m. infomercials.

Speaking of charlatans, Hapajap of Electronic Tigers is back in action–oh, did you forget who he was? Here’s an unabridged nugget from his archives:

Again, I did not edit this strip in any way.

Again, I did not edit this strip in any way.

Anyway, gone is any mention of his co-writer El Gato Negro, and indeed the site’s focus has shifted entirely to his Right Left Center series of political strips.
Of course, Hapajap hasn’t quite healed enough from his ‘negotiations’ with Dubli’s collections department to actually, you know, draw anything new. But hey, he’s still your man for impotent rage and strawman arguments so far removed from reality they could’ve been penned by Jovian robots sent to Earth to investigate the mysterious phenomena of love, M&Ms and liberalism.

In fairness, I should mention that his blog has gained more substance than ‘here’s the comic, it’s so videogames‘ or ‘OH GOD MONEY PLZ I HAVE A FAMILY ps fuck the poor.’ …That is, when he’s not cribbing from blowhards slightly less stupid than he is. Anyway, now he posts shrill rants that make his comic look concise and almost sane.
(If you don’t feel like reading that link, and I don’t blame you, I’m just gonna say that the first paragraph is composed entirely of whining about how the word ‘gay’ means ‘homosexual’ now. I propose we ’skewer’ [is 'skew' the word you're looking for, Hapajap, or are you just unable to contemplate anything without an element of violence?] the English language to redefine ‘Hapajap’ as ‘crappy little bullshit man.’)

…Well, at least people have stopped Googling ‘what happened to electronic tigers.’

P.S. Hapajap supports the secession of Texas from the Union.

you’re kind of an idiot, aren’t you?

I was at neww and not only did Ryan Sohmer walk around the hall talking to fans and other creators but instead of hanging out with the creators on Saturday night, he went out with a bar with about 50 of his readers and hung out.

He’s a proffessional. the rest of the people there could have learned alot from him and lar.

  2. Rex Dandycorn Says:

Why yes, he is a ‘proffessional.’ And he will never, ever, let anybody forget it. It’s almost like he looks down on other people on the basis of his ‘proffessionalism’ because he has no other basis to do so.

For the record, Jim Davis and Bil Keane are ‘proffessionals’ as well, but I would never accuse either of being funny. For that matter, I would never accuse either of walking around the con floor all shifty-eyed like a high school kid who couldn’t get a date to the dance and came anyway.

wasn’t this show supposed to not be like every other show where creators were stuck behind their tables? ryan wasn’t allowed to walk around, talking to people? he talked to everyone he could and introduced himself to other creators.

just because he’s succesful doesn’t mean he’s an asshole

  4. Rex Dandycorn Says:

Completely agree with you. He’s an asshole, but that has nothing to do with his being ’succesful.’

  5. Jeff Says:

why is he an asshole? Because he walked around the show? because he didnt sit behind his table the entire thing? because he never misses an update? because he thinks other webcomic creators should deliver to their readers? because his company supports alot of the webcomic creators that were at the show?

I like the guy alot and i respect him. he could have gone to bed like everyone else did on the weekend but instead went out both nights and talked extensively with fans.

he came to my table in a bar and sat with us for half an hour.

im trying to understand why you dislike him so much?

  6. Rex Dandycorn Says:

Because his comic is shitty, and shit delivered fresh to your doorstep six days a week, on time, every time, is still shit. And I don’t know if you missed it on the way in, but ragging on shitty comics and the people behind them is kind of this blog’s thing.

P.S. I looked into your claim that his company supports ‘alot of the webcomic creators’ at the show. Of Blind Ferret’s listed affiliates, only Cyanide and Happiness and SMBC were represented at NEWW. I’ve heard he’s worked with PvP as well, so I’ll give you three. I’m not counting his own comics because of course his company is going to support his comics.
Please feel free to correct me, but from where I’m standing, 3 out of 41 comics by other people (and that’s just the listed ones) hardly qualifies as ‘alot.’

  7. Jeff Says:

you should really look into how many other creators bfe employs. you’ll find your list grows quite a bit.

in any event, i was just looking to see if there was any good coverage of the panel and i ended up here. on the bright side, im glad i was able to double your page views for the week. enjoy obscurity.

  8. Rex Dandycorn Says:

Thanks! See you next year–I take it I’ll know you by the “I BE AWESOME” t-shirt?

  9. Jehu Says:

Oh Rex… Good to see you updating. It’s rather telling that to most people Webcomics Weekend was a chance to meet and hang out with other creators and have a good time while Ryan spent his time “working the crowd” and avoiding the worthless rabble who aren’t “professional”.

And regarding the disappearence of El Gato Negro. I would bet you money that Hapajap (ugh) just made him up so he justify his shitty racist humor. Hey he’s 1/28 asian and there’s a black guy around here somewhere so it’s cool right?

  10. Dutch Says:

I’ve just gotten used to Hapajap now. He’s like the VenomfangX (See Youtube) of the webcomics community.

You could make a drinking game based on his work. Everytime he makes a strawman claim it’s one drink. Every anti-liberal claim its two and if he compares Yu-Gi-Oh cards to evolution, you drink a stein. :D
